Background
to the Study
The relationship between employees and employers is based on the respect from the employer to the employee to motivate him/her to a larger extent that the employer has to give the respect to the employee not only his reward such as salary and wages but by different means such as symbolic motivation after observing the performance of the employee. By this types of symbolic motivation, employee will be motivated and connected to their work and the comfortable environment created by the authorities is very helpful to make the employee devoted and committed to their job honestly and faithfully. Job satisfaction by employees has always been an important factor in the success of any organization. As wages, salary and fringe benefits are significantly and positively related to job satisfaction, they play an important role in attracting employees and raising their productivity in various organizations.
There
seem to be decline in the productivity of the workers especially civil service
in Nigeria recently, efforts in transforming the civil service and other
government institutions for effective and efficient service delivery has, no
doubt in recent times become one of the most pressing fundamental
pre-occupations of government. Agba, (2016). The above problems in organizations
have led to series of industrial actions in Nigeria and massive agitation for
increase in worker’s salaries, remuneration and other conditions of service.
In
some years back, dated from 1960, motivation in tertiary institutions was
extended to employees in several forms such as free housing, free feeding, free
cars, good training (capacity building) policies, promotion, pay rise, personnel
recognition, favourable work conditions, incentives such as bonuses, leave
allowances, e.t.c geared towards addressing the varied needs of the workforce to
enhance productivity (Adi, 2000). Thus, any manager that intends to succeed in the
attainment of organizational set goals must be able to incorporate the
individual needs of workers into the overall organizational goals. This to a
large extent elicits workers’ commitment and resolve to ensure success of the
organization.
Unlike
in the present day, the unpalatable situation of the welfare schemes of workers
in private institutions like The Redeemers University, Ede may be attributable
to many factors with the most prominent and pervasive one that seems to be
careless, neglect or failure to appreciate the important role of motivation in
arousing workers’ interest in their jobs as well as ensuring their sustained
commitment to work for organizational productivity.
